When you moved into your current home, did you stay with the incumbent provider? If so, you could be \u00a3345 a year worse off on average according to recent research.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re one of the huge number of people who are still a customer of their original energy provider (The provider who is in charge of maintaining the energy infrastructure in your area, and is such is your \u2018default\u2019 (or incumbent) provider), you\u2019re not the only one losing out \u2013 10 million other people have done the same \u2013 That\u2019s very nearly half the country, and together they\u2019re losing out on \u00a33.6 Billion<\/p>\n

\"natural<\/a>On average, incumbent providers charge around \u00a31,200 per year for gas and electricity, although rabid price cutting and competition with other providers means that you can now save nearly \u00a3350 a year on your bills.<\/p>\n

In research done earlier this year by Gas and Electricity comparison<\/a> site moneysupermarket.com, OVO Energy were the cheapest provider all across the UK, with the \u2018big six\u2019 companies sitting quite low down the price league tables. Those six companies continue to hold the lion\u2019s share of customers however, as people are often a little suspicious of paying a company for electricity when they do not physically supply the power themselves. This means that the other providers will slash prices to attract customers, and as such the savvy homeowner can save a bundle. Of course, this often causes another problem when homeowners then feel that the low prices are \u2018too good to be true\u2019 and stick with their current supplier.<\/p>\n

The most expensive region for those who choose to stay with their incumbent provider is the Midlands \u2013 Although they also stand to save the most money by changing, in the region of \u00a3370 a year, which is almost a third.<\/p>\n

All in all, there is plenty of money to be saved on your gas and electricity, just don\u2019t be scared to take the plunge! Incumbent providers rely on customers who either don\u2019t want to or don\u2019t know to check, but you can save yourself a packet by simply shopping around!<\/p>\n
