My views are that we will become a nation of renters. Home ownership, unless prices fall, can never be the right of passage for the the under 30s generation. It is in bred that owning a property is wealth by the back door of debt. The past few years has seen property as a cash cow, the BTL market kicked in the teeth of any first time buyer, maybe we have gone back to the Victorian days of the landed gentry, or should i say the landed BTL speculator. The world economy has been but into debt due to the obsession of buying property, maybe all houses should be built of gold becuse that will be the next bubble that will burst. Owning a home in the past was not an investment is was somewhere to live, not an obsession to keep saying I'm so rich and renting is for the surfs.

Hi Ruben,

Interesting article and I have written a similar one recently comparing the UK and US to Europe.

There are also other factors, most prominently the fact that European rental contracts are considerably weighted to the tenant and not the landlord. Also because rents are quite low it means a lot of tenants would rather rent than buy.

I also mention my theory that home ownership will drop in the UK in coming years due to the recent economic conditions. I believe we have entered a new housing cycle completely different to the past.

James
